Pathfinder Study Club

The Pathfinder Study Club is based in Scotland and is run by Dr Elaine Halley. We are part of the Seattle Study Club. https://www.seattlestudyclub.com/

Our format is quite unique because the philosophy of the study club is that we all learn together and from each other no matter our experience. We strive to make it a safe and trusting place to meet up, share problems and ideas and have the ability to be motivated and inspired by the world-class content and speakers that we have access to. Our year begins in September 2025 and we meet monthly after that for our evening sessions plus we have 2 full-day events. The sessions are hosted by Dr Elaine Halley and supported by Flora Couper. Our members also have access to the Seattle Study Club educational online programme.

Composite Resin: A New Approach to Satisfy Our Patient’s Ever Growing Demands for Aesthetic Dentistry: Simplicity Meets Predictability

It seems like every day new techniques, materials and devices become available in dentistry, and to keep up the pace, it is fundamental for today’s professionals to be updated on what is possible to perform, and to understand which materials and techniques are worth following.

Knowing which class of composites should be used in each specific clinical situation is paramount for the success of aesthetic direct restorations: In this lecture we will talk about the clinical requirements and present new technologies that are available to simplify this important clinical challenge.

In addition to that, it goes without saying that tooth whitening is a powerful ally in restorative dentistry. The abundance of whitening systems available in the market today prove that there are lots of demands generated by consumers on how to get their teeth whitened. Dental whitening is still a relatively young technique in Dentistry, so it is not unusual to get confused amongst so many techniques and materials. The main causes of tooth discoloration will be addressed, and more than that, the various whitening techniques, also how to prevent the occurrence of sensitivity in certain situations.

Lastly, information about other clinical procedures, such as light curing and polishing will be presented, both fundamental steps for the longevity of our restorative work. With such understanding, new treatment options will unfold. It will be easier for professionals to treat cases with much more tranquility than otherwise.

Wake Up to Dental Sleep Medicine – Changing Lives with Every Breath — Sleep Disorders and Appliance Therapy

Many of us place more importance on charging our mobile phone at night than our body and brain.

During this interactive course we will show how sleep is often the neglected foundation that supports our physical and mental wellbeing, allowing us to enjoy a good quality of life. It is only when we are sleep deprived that we appreciate how this compromises how we feel and negatively impacts our mood and personal relationships.

Attendees will gain confidence screening patients and identifying those suitable for care in their practice following a proven digital clinical and laboratory workflow that complies with NICE guidelines.

The course has support from one of the leading UK consultant Sleep Physicians, who can provide support such as Home Sleep Tests, patient diagnosis and treatment prescription. The course includes interactive breakout sessions, in small groups, with:

• Panthera Dental, providers of one of the most precise digital Mandibular Advancement Appliances (MAD), to advise of appliance design and laboratory support.
• DEXIS imaging, for hands-on intra-oral scanning and bite registration for a MAD.
• Use of smartphone apps / wearable devices and sleep tests for patient screening, medical diagnosis and confirmation of the efficacy of a MAD.

Problems and Pearls

Research shows adults who have been out of the traditional classroom for years are typically “problem-centered” learners. From the mundane to the challenging, we strategise and make decisions about dilemmas with which we are faced on a daily basis.

For this reason, problem-solving sessions are a natural fit for a study club session because they allow adults to collaborate with colleagues in a way in which they are already familiar.

For this session we will ask each member to bring 1 problem and 1 clinical/practice tip with them. “Problems” can be scheduling issues, clinical issues, communication issues, really anything that you struggle with at the office. “Pearls” can be any product specific tip that works well in your hands, a type of procedural pearl, a preparation for a restoration you find saves time, no matter how simplistic or complex.

Also, a practice tip or trick that could be helpful to another individual (e.g., what makes your practice unique, inter-office communication forms, scheduling protocol, sterilisation, or inventory tips, etc.) is valuable to your peers. Offering tips and/or tricks for both clinical and non- clinical areas have incredible value.

Restorative Considerations for Tooth Rehabilitation in the Esthetic Zone: Composite vs. Ceramic

Join Drs Nate Lawson and Taiseer Sulaiman in a dynamic and engaging collaborative debate as they explore the strengths and limitations of composite resins and ceramics in tooth rehabilitation, particularly in the aesthetic zone.

In this interactive session, the two experts will discuss:

• The advantages of composite resins, including tooth preservation, chairside shade matching, single-visit restorations, and cost-effectiveness for patients.

• The benefits of ceramic restorations, such as superior mechanical strength, enhanced optical properties, and the opportunity for custom design with dental technicians.

Throughout the session, Nate and Taiseer will examine the aesthetic and physical properties of both materials, diving into how various clinical techniques affect the final outcome.

This lively debate will not only shed light on the performance of each material, but also help clinicians make informed decisions about which material and technique best meets the needs of their patients.

Get ready for a thought-provoking exploration of these two materials from two leading voices in restorative dentistry.

A New Paradigm for Excellence: Orthodontic Preparation for Restorative Treatment

Achieving optimal restorative outcomes often hinges on thorough and precise orthodontic preparation.

Malocclusions can present significant challenges that may limit the potential for ideal restorative results, leading to compromised aesthetics, suboptimal contact points, and functional occlusal issues if not properly addressed.

Orthodontics play a crucial role in facilitating superior restorative treatments and is equally important in achieving successful outcomes in orthognathic surgery.

This program is designed to equip contemporary orthodontists with the principles necessary for effective orthodontic preparation for restorative procedures. Similarly, restorative dentists will benefit from understanding orthodontic strategies that can enhance the quality of their treatments.

Participants will explore preparatory strategies applicable to both fixed appliances and aligners. Dr Faber will provide an in-depth overview of a comprehensive orthodontic preparation protocol, covering both short-term partial treatments and full-spectrum orthodontic cases.

Eliminating Removable Partial Dentures through Multidisciplinary Planning

Uncover the intricacies of comprehensive, multidisciplinary planning aimed at eliminating the reliance on removable partial dentures.

In this engaging session led by Dr Ali Afshar, we will explore a compelling case where a patient expresses the desire to free themselves from long-term dependence on removable prosthetics.

Our journey begins with a meticulous analysis of the patient’s current oral health status, their unique needs, and their aspiration for a life without removable dentures.

• Thorough Diagnosis: Utilise state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and methodologies to gain a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s oral health.

• Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Engage various dental specialties to ensure every aspect of the case is scrutinised and addressed from multiple vantage points.

• Risk Assessment and Management: Identify potential challenges and develop strategies to mitigate them, ensuring a smooth and successful treatment journey.
